For some people the idea of working from home sounds like a dream come true and many might like to jump at the first chance they might get at doing so. Although it does offer you a ton of advantages you should be aware that there are a few disadvantages of working at home you should be aware of before you even decide to try something of this nature.
Probably one of the biggest advantages that will pop up over and over again when it comes to having a job at home is the fact that it gives you so much freedom to do what you want. However; this advantage can turn into a major disadvantage. If you are someone that has always had a boss to answer to and have never really been in a position where you are in complete control of your time, you might not be disciplined enough. To be successful at working from home you truly have to be a very self disciplined person. You need to be able to manage your time wisely in order to be effective at your work. If you do not have a disciplined plan of attack you will end up not being able to accomplish the goals of the job that you may have set down for yourself.
Self discipline is highly important but you also need to understand that even if you are able to discipline yourself for the task at hand, working from home is going to provide you with a lot of various distractions. You may have structured your time to a “T” and still discover that you were unable to finish the job due to outside distractions. Your family and friends may have a hard time understanding, that your job at home is basically no different than if you were working in an office somewhere and this could cause problems, because they will more than likely become a distraction due to this misconception on their part. You should also realize that the hub bub of daily home life around you can also be a source of distraction as well.
Probably the main way that you will be working at home will be through your home computer. Most home based work assignments are telecommuting jobs of one kind or another so you will be heavily relying upon the use of your Internet connection and your personal computer. When all goes well, this definitely is a very convenient set up, but; as we all know, computers and Internet connections do not always run as smoothly as we would like. So if there are problems with your computer or with your Internet, you are going to be out of income until the situation is fixed.
Another disadvantage for some might be the fact that they have no other contact with fellow employees. Sure there might be people here and there that you would rather not have anything to do with, however; there are those that not only make your day go a long faster but they provide support in a variety of different areas, especially boosting ones morale.
If you are very self disciplined, distractions don't bother you and you absolutely don't mind working completely alone, then perhaps these disadvantages will not hamper your ability to be successful working from home. Should you though, feel these disadvantages might be too overwhelming the chance is then that you should probably look for work elsewhere.
